The 39 Copa del Rey MAPFRE begins

The 39 Copa del Rey MAPFRE begins with a great day of regattas

The long-awaited return to the Copa del Rey MAPFRE competition met expectations, and the nine classes were able to complete their program in excellent wind conditions that confirm the magnificent reputation of the bay of Palma. The Aifos 500 skippered by King Felipe VI occupies the second provisional position in the competitive BMW ORC 1 class.

The 39 Copa del Rey MAPFRE began with a new day at Embat that allowed the completion of the scheduled program: two events for all classes except Mallorca Sotheby’s Women’s Cup and Herbalife Nutrition J70, which could take up to three. The wind was on time for the appointment, with a clear Embat that blew from the south with intensities of 13 to 16 knots for another glorious day of sailing in the bay of Palma. Today the ClubSwan 36 and J70 monotypes made their debut in the regatta.

The leaders at the end of the first day are: Alegre in IRC I class, Hatari in ClubSwan 50, Selene – Alifax in ClubSwan 42, G Spot in ClubSwan 36, Tengher in BMW ORC 1, Soho Caixabank Theater in BMW ORC 2, Laplaza Assessors at BMW ORC 3, Profand – RFGV – Deporte Galego at Mallorca Sotheby’s Women’s Cup and Patakin at Herbalife Nutrition J70.

Magnificent show on the bay
The fleet competed in three regatta areas deployed by the Regatta Committee in the bay of Palma. In the water, about a thousand sailors aboard 105 boats of 19 nationalities divided into nine classes, all wanting to make up for the absence of the Cup in 2020.

In IRC 1 class, which brings together the largest ships of this edition, the Briton Alegre is the first leader. The TP52 of Andrés Soriano, class champion in 2017, prevailed in the two races contested and leads by two points to the Paprec Recyclage of Stephane Neve, the boat that followed in both tests.

The first day of the always spectacular ClubSwan 50 confirmed the excellent form of the current world champion in the category, Marcus Brennecke’s Hatari. The German boat gave no options to her rivals and returned to the pits with an immaculate card: two victories out of two possible. The lack of regularity of the rest of the fleet allows the leader to face the second day with five points of advantage over his immediate pursuer, the Russian Bronenosec 50 of Polina Lyubomirova (3 + 4). Pablo Garriga’s Tenaz, the only Spanish representative in the class, is fifth (11 + 3).

The battle between the ClubSwan 42 began more evenly. The Italian Selene – Alifax of Massimo de Campo leads the provisional after winning in the first round and signing a third in the next, won by the defending champion, the Romanian Natalia de George Brailoiu (4 + 1). A single point separates both at the end of the day, ahead of the Spanish Nadir de Pedro Vaquer (5 + 2).

In the ClubSwan 36 class premiere, Giangiancomo Serena’s G Spot starts as the leader after scoring a second and a first. The Monegasque boat, which has just won the last class event in Sardinia, leads ahead of the Italians Farstar of Lorenzo Mondo, who could not recover from an off-line in the second heat (1 + 6), and Thirtysix of Edoardo Ferragamo (3 + 4).

The competitive BMW ORC 1 starts led by Alberto Magnani’s Swan 45 Tengher, who added a first and a second. The Aifos 500 of the Spanish Armada, skippered today by King Felipe VI, occupies the second position after signing an excellent day in which it went from less to more: fourth in the initial test and victory in the second.

In BMW ORC 2, the same boat that led the first day of 2019, the Soho Caixabank Theater by Javier Banderas, begins in the lead. The Swan 42 skippered by Daniel Cuevas seeks to recover from the second position of the last edition, and prevailed in both tests to lead the provisional with four rental points against Pedro Gil’s Defcom Seguridad (4 + 2).

In BMW ORC 3, the largest class of this edition (18 boats), the best of the day was the defending champion, Carlos Rodríguez’s Laplaza Assessors. The Sinergia 40 Mod. Confirmed the importance of consistency in such a large fleet, making good his two seconds to lead the classification with four points of rent over the Foster Swiss of Ignacio Zalvide (4 + 4). The partial victories of the day corresponded to Pedro Cabrer’s Vell Marí (eleventh by a DNF in the second round) and Vincenzo de Blasio’s Scugnizza (eighth by 16 in the first).

The Mallorca Sotheby’s Women’s Cup class debuted with the J80 monotypes, confirming the equality anticipated by its protagonists after Sunday’s training day. Three teams shared the victories of the day, and the fleet returned to port with a tie at the head of the provisional between Profand of the Galician Patricia Suárez (1 + 3 + 2) and Decoexsa of the current J80 world champion , the Basque Olatz Muñoz (2 + 1 + 3).

The debut of Herbalife Nutrition J70 permitted Majorcan Luis Albert Solana’s Patakin to become the first class leader in the waters of Palma after signing a third and two first.

The competition returns tomorrow with two rounds for everyone except the J80 and Women’s Cup, which will play up to three.

The 39 Copa del Rey MAPFRE is organized by the Real Club Náutico de Palma and the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation, with the sponsorship of MAPFRE and the institutional collaboration of the Government of the Balearic Islands, the Palma City Council, the Balearic Port Authority and the Balearic Sailing Federation.
