Charlie Enright: “There’s nothing like The Ocean Race”

11th Hour Racing Team skipper Charlie Enright reflects back on his amazing experience in The Ocean Race…

The transition back to ‘normal life’ after The Ocean Race is unique to each sailor.

We caught up last month with Charlie Enright, the skipper of the winning 11th Hour Racing Team, as he reflected on the past six months after the final frenzy at the Grand Finale in Genova, Italy and his transition ashore.

“We do what we do because every day is different, there’s always a new challenge and you’re doing it with a team. So there’s definitely a vacant space in my heart and in my brain,” Enright said, when asked about the adjustment period.

“It’s a big let down to leave such an intense situation with such a tight-knit group of people… There’s nothing like The Ocean Race and to think that you would keep living at that level after it’s over would be naive.”

Enright says he’s keeping an eye on his friends in the IMOCA fleet and what’s happening on the water as sailors and teams get back into race mode this spring.

“You really do form a bond with everybody that you do this crazy adventure with and that’s something that never breaks or goes away… There’s an immense amount of respect for everybody that’s in the race, competitor or team mate.”
