Titanic Anniversary “A Night to Remember”

Titanic Belfast

They thought it was unsinkable, but at 2:20 in the morning of that fateful night in 1912 the world’s most famous ocean liner sank below the surface of the sea, after colliding with an iceberg two and a half hours earlier.

News of the tragic shipwreck and the loss of 1,490 passengers and crew was greeted with pain, shock and disbelief around the world, yet more than a hundred years later, the maritime disaster has not yet faded from our minds. In the decades that followed, the stories on the Titanic passenger list, which contains a cast of characters of all nationalities and ranks, have spawned countless newspaper articles, books, movies, memorials, museums, and experiences.

The place of the ocean liner in the history of the world was further strengthened in 1985, when Dr. Robert Ballard discovered the remains of the Titanic in the depths of the sea, as well as in 1997, after the premiere of the famous film of James Cameron starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, who won 11 Oscars.

However, the 109th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic will be remembered around the world, but especially in Belfast, the city that designed and built the luxurious ocean liner.

Opened nearly 100 years after the day the RMS Titanic sailed from the Harland & Wolff shipyards, the mighty Titanic Belfast is the largest museum dedicated to the famous ship in the world and was awarded the World’s Best Tourist Attraction in 2016. This interactive museum tells the story of the tragic ocean liner and the people who built and sailed it, including real pieces of the famous ship.

While he is looking forward to welcoming his guests as soon as the time comes, his traditional anniversary commemorations and events will take place virtually in 2021 due to the pandemic.

This year, the Titanic Belfast will host an online event called “A Night to Remember” on the anniversary of the sinking. He will also offer live content on his Twitter account and will relate the events that took place before the ship collided with the iceberg until the tragic sinking of it. Everyone will be able to follow him on @TitanicBelfast’s social media.

Elsewhere in the city, the Belfast Titanic Society will host a series of online talks, including a recollection of events 109 years ago, the day after news of the maritime disaster broke. In addition, Belfast City Hall, where there is a memorial garden dedicated to all those who died on the Titanic, will publish a special video on April 15 to mark the anniversary.

And when we can travel again, Belfast will be ready and packed with Titanic-related attractions and activities to enjoy like never before. From the Titanic Hotel, created in the former headquarters of Harland and Wolff, to the walks on the bleachers where the ocean liner first entered the sea, to its huge dry dock and its original water hole, there is a great variety of guided tours, attractions, exhibitions, events and experiences worthy of the iconic “ship of dreams”.
