The Real Club Marítimo de Santander has presented today, with the presence of its president Fernando Pereda, the mayor of Santander Gema Igual, the president of the Port Authority Francisco Martín, the sports councilor Felipe Pérez and the director of Olympic preparation Santiago López- Vázquez, a great event that will put both the RCMS and the city of Santander as the center of world sports attention: the Santander Test Event – Port Authority Trophy.
The test, which will be held between May 4 and 7 in the waters of the Santander Abra, summons the top 10 of the Olympic sailing of the 49er and Nacra 17 classes in a key appointment, since it will be the last opportunity for these categories to measure themselves before the Olympics from Tokyo.
For the President of R.C.M.S, Fernando Pereda, this event shows the clear objective of the sports club: “It is an honor for us to be able to organize and host this small but great test before the Olympics. Small perhaps due to the number of registrants – half a hundred – but impressive in terms of their track records. Santander will have the opportunity to see the upcoming 49er and Nacra 17 class medalists in full action. A real show ”.
“The objective and values of the RCMS are undoubtedly the promotion and love of sailing and the sea, and it is our work base. Great athletes have grown from this love of sailing, some of them representing us at the Olympic Games, but all with a common value such as love of the sea. As our motto says: RCMS Pride ”, added Pereda.
The Cantabrian representative in the Olympic Games. Diego Botín, along with his teammate Iago López-Marra in the 49er class (4th in the world ranking), will play the role of hosts for the crews that will surely play the Olympic medals with them, as will the ESP team. Sailing Team of Nacra 17, Tara Pacheco and Florian Trittel.
Among the 49er crews that have already announced their interest are different medalists or world champions such as the New Zealand representatives, crews from Croatia, Austria, Germany, France, Germany, Switzerland or the USA, all in the world Top10 and national representatives in Tokyo. , in addition to the host country of the Games.
The Nacra 17 class is not far behind and the show is served. Together with the number 1 of the world ranking Tara Pacheco and Florian Trittel, the world top 10 will be in Santander waters to compete in this Test Event. France, Germany, Italy, Finland, Austria, New Zealand, USA or Japan have not wanted to miss this pre-Tokyo golden opportunity.
The mayor of the city of Santander, Gema Igual, also emphasized the importance of the sporting event: “For Santander the celebration of this event is great news, because seeing the best in world sailing sail through the bay of our city is a unique opportunity that we cannot miss. Facilities such as the CEAR, the Gamazo dune or the pilot ramp make it easier for sailors to practice this sport, but also for fans who can get much closer to the bay and enjoy the beauty of sailing. There are less than 100 days left for the Olympic Games in Tokyo and Santander has shown its ability to organize large sailing events and, this time, we will be delighted to do so again because it is an extraordinarily beautiful sport ”.
This “test event” is a preview of the already established City of Santander International Sailing Week, organized by the Cantabrian sports entity, and which will be held as an appetizer of the official competition on dates coinciding with the Olympic Games.
