Spain, the absolute protagonist of the new 52 SUPER SERIES 2021 calendar
Valencia Mar, Puerto Portals, Mahón and RCN Palma will be the venues for the four tests that will make up the competition from July to November
52 SUPER SERIES has made the decision to change part of the calendar for the 2021 season and focus it on four tests in Spain from July to November. The change has been made to offer teams certainty to be able to travel on their trips from all over the planet since uncertainties remain with Covid-19. The changes affect the first half of the season.
The objective of the change promoted this week by the Board of Directors of 52 SUPER SERIES is to offer certainty to shipowners, teams and locations. At this time, many teams cannot travel and most events have local restrictions that prevent their normal development.
Thus, the Saint Tropez, Baiona and Cascáis regattas that were to be held in May, June and July have been rescheduled to open the 2022 season and leave the 2021 calendar. The organisation’s intention is to hold four regattas from July to November with a maximum role for Spain with the venues in Valencia, Puerto Portals, Menorca and RCN Palma, which will be the final test and in which the Rolex TP52 World Championship will be played.
“It was a very tough decision to make. We want everyone to understand that our circuit involves people who are spread out all over the world, and while things are moving in the right direction in many parts of Europe, uncertainty remains unfortunately. Our focus as organizers is on being responsible and pragmatic, and we must develop calendars in which we have confidence that they can be carried forward. In this changing world situation we must try to minimize the risk for the people involved in the regatta and generate a security situation with competitive events, which is what is expected from the best regatta circuit in the world ”, explains Agustín Zulueta, general director of 52 SUPER SERIES.
And he maintains: “With this new calendar we believe that we have the opportunity to offer a calendar with regattas to enjoy, competitive and in environments that we know very well and that simplify the logistics for transporting the boats and traveling.”
Zulueta thanks Saint Tropez, Baiona and Cascáis for their availability to change the dates since the three venues have been very sensitive and receptive to the need to transfer their regattas to 2022. Thus, the president of Monte Real Club de Yates, José Luis Álvarez explains:
“We are confident that the COVID situation will improve in the coming months and allow the celebration of BAIONA SAILING WEEK in 2022. Then we will be more prepared than ever to receive the 52 SUPER SERIES and it will be an equally special edition, since it will coincide with the Xacobeo extended by COVID until next year ”.
And from the Clube Naval de Cascais, President Gonsalo Esteves said:
“While we are disappointed with the decision, we fully understand it, as we all continue to live uncertain times with the evolution of the pandemic. Cascáis will wait and look towards 2022 and will welcome the 52 SUPER SERIES to our waters for the fifth time in nine years ».
