QUANTUM RACING POWERED BY AMERICAN MAGIC ON THE CUSP OF HOMETOWN WIN…
After no racing was possible today at the XS 52 SUPER SERIES Newport Trophy due to insufficient wind Quantum Racing powered by American Magic will go afloat Sunday carrying a three points lead, looking to close out their first regatta victory since rebranding last year as they joined forces with the New York Yacht Club’s American Magic America’s Cup program.
After narrowly missing out on several occasions last year, there are high hopes that Doug DeVos’ TP52 team will deliver on the New York Yacht Club’s home waters. The team led by Victor Diaz de Leon have sailed a consistent series to date, winning three races from six starts.
“You always want to be in this position, leading into the final day. But we have led before and have not ended up winning the regatta and so this is part of the learning process and progress. They need to finish it off. Eat, sleep and repeat is the message. They have been sailing well enough, the afterguard have been choosing the right side and we have some wheels (meaning we are quick). And Vayu are sailing fast and smart so it is looking good, so too with Gladiator.” Enthuses James Lyne the Quantum Racing coach.
The New York Yacht Club team have the Whitcraft family’s Team Vayu three points behind. They could now go one better than their third in Scarlino last year – when they finished behind Provezza and Quantum Racing Powered by American Magic – as they have a 12 points lead over Tony Langley’s Gladiator, Takashi Okura’s Sled and Andy Soriano’s Alegre which all share the same 32 points aggregate.
Racing is scheduled to start from 1000hrs Sunday with light winds forecast again, the hope being the early northerly gradient wind will give way to a light thermal sea breeze.
