Penultimate day of the 2024 Optimist World Championship

The rain has passed, calm has arrived, and Back is still leading, but his escort is now the Spaniard Carbonell

The city of Mar del Plata woke up to a curtain of rain on the penultimate day of the Optimist Class World Championship organized by the Mar del Plata Yacht Club (CNMP) and the IODA.

The competitors had a couple of hours of postponement on land. The rain stopped but left behind a very light breeze from the east of about 6 knots.

In these conditions, a single race was held, which was won impeccably by the Spaniard Mateo Carbonell, who, running through the middle of the course, was the best at reading the pressures and small swings. In this way, he rises from fourth place to second in the general classification, accumulating 33 points. The leader remains the Brazilian Arthur Back, who achieved a good seventh place and remains ahead with 22 points against him.

The previous runners-up, also from Brazil and Spain, did not have a great race and this was taken advantage of by the Greek Ian Paganópulus, who finished third and rose from fifth to third place in the general classification with 41 points against him.

This Saturday will be the last day and winds of 10 to 12 knots are expected from the southeast. A new scenario, as have been each of the five days of individual races. All the leaders have at least one bad race that they are discarding, therefore nothing is guaranteed and only those who make the fewest mistakes will remain on the podium.

After the two races on Saturday, the awards ceremony will be held on the central court of the Mar del Plata Nautical Club.
