The Optimist World Championship will return to Spain in 2023.
La Ballena Alegre Sailing Club, located in the heart of the Costa Brava in Girona, has widely surpassed the other four candidates in the election that took place this Wednesday, July 7, in Riva del Garda, where this year’s World Cup is being played. The proposed dates for the celebration of the 2023 World Cup in Spain are from June 10 to 21.

2023 will mark the 20th anniversary of the last Optimist World Cup held in Spain. The last two were in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and La Coruña in the years 2003 and 2000 respectively. This will be the sixth time it has been held in our country, previously Arenys de Mar, Roses and Ciutadella were the headquarters.

For the election of the 2023 World Cup, the different national delegations voted and the Girona club and the candidacy of Oman have reached the final. The vote was wide in favor of CV La Ballena Alegre, which won with 36 votes compared to 17 for Oman. In the first round the candidacy of Slovenia fell and in the second Saint Petersburg (Russia) was the one that was left out of the final vote.

The sports director of CV La Ballena Alegre, Pep Subirats, in charge of presenting and defending the candidacy, was very happy about the result: “We knew it was difficult, since the rest of the candidacies were very important, but from the first moment the delegations were very receptive to our project ”.

Subirats explained that “in 2023 the 50th anniversary of the international recognition of the Optimist class will be celebrated and Spain has always played a very important role in its history; I think this has also been taken into account ”.

The representative of the Catalan club wants to thank especially “the president of AECIO, Kiko Sánchez; the Team Leader of Spain, Kiko Igual; to the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation, the Catalan, the Club Nàutic L’Escala, the Consell Català de l’Esport and many high-level sailors, who through social networks have shown their unconditional support from the first moment to that this has finally become a reality ”.

The recent Optimist class European Championship organized by RCN El Puerto de Santa María (Cádiz), and where the representative of CV La Ballena Alegre presented the Spanish candidacy to the different delegations, has also been a perfect showcase for the World Cup of 2023 ends up landing in Spain.
