Optimist South American
Once the team championship was over, open competition was resumed this Thursday with three other regattas in the South American Optimist Class Championship, organized by the Mar del Plata Yacht Club and the IODA. This time with the fleets divided into gold, silver and bronze, that is to say that for the first time all the leaders were together.
Once again, the conditions of the Mar del Plata court were unbeatable: Winds of between 10 and 14 knots from the NE sector that increased with the course of the afternoon, low tide that favored clear starts and good waves.
The powerful US Navy today showed all its credentials and took the first three places on the provisional podium by storm. The best of the day was Richard Sykes with 1,1,9 reaching third place with 30 points. In second place is David Coates with 26 points (4,10 and 2 today). While the new leader is also the North American Logan Mraz with 24 points (3, 7 and 4).
The two Argentines who are in the dispute (Sanchez and Travaglini) did not have a good start, but when the wind picked up the local helmsman showed all his potential and was placed 2 and 1 in the following regattas, however, he received a penalty of 16 points of the measurement committee in the second, which relegates him to 4th place overall with 38 points, while Travaglini is 5th with 42, both are still the best South Americans in the tournament. The best placed girl is now Argentina’s Julieta Benedetto Josef in 11th place overall.
Tomorrow will be the final day, where the last two regattas will be run from 12 noon and winds from the N.E. quadrant are expected again. of greater intensity.
