Michelin WISAMO inflatable sail to improve boat fuel efficiency by 20%
Michelin presents the WISAMO project, an innovative solution that contributes to the decarbonisation of maritime transport.
The Wing Sail Mobility (WISAMO) project is an automated, telescopic and inflatable wing sail system that can be installed on both merchant ships and pleasure boats.
The inflatable wing sail takes advantage of the wind, a free, universal and inexhaustible source of propulsion. Its revolutionary design enables a boat to reduce its fuel consumption and therefore have a positive impact on the environment by reducing CO2 emissions.
Michelin’s WISAMO project ensures that your inflatable wing sail can be installed on most merchant ships and pleasure boats. It is especially suitable for ro-ro ships, bulk carriers, and tankers and tankers.
It can be installed as original equipment in new construction or upgraded on in-service vessels.
The wing’s range of use is one of the widest on the market and can be used on all shipping lanes. the telescopic mast is retractable, making it easy for ships to enter ports and pass under bridges. The system claims that it can improve a boat’s fuel efficiency by up to 20%.
The advantage of wind power is that wind power is clean, free, universal, and totally uncontroversial. And it offers a very promising way to improve the environmental impact of merchant ships.
The WISAMO system will be installed for the first time on a merchant ship in 2022, when Michelin expects it to go into production after the testing phase is complete.
