Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, Mistral forces postponement until tomorrow

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup fleet gathered punctually at 12 midday CEST in the starting area off Porto Cervo, with the intention of completing the scheduled coastal race.

Only the Maxi 2 class remained in port, with a notice postponing the start to 1 p.m. due to the stronger than expected Mistral wind. Unfortunately the anticipated drop in wind strength proved to be wishful thinking, with the breeze holding steady at over 25 knots and gusts well in excess of 30 knots. After two postponements pending a possible decrease in intensity, at 12.47 p.m. the Race Committee hoisted the AP over Alpha pennants, signalling the end of racing for the day. “We did our best to get most of the fleet racing in suitable conditions, but the wind has picked up further. Our plans for tomorrow include a 10 a.m. warning signal for all classes.” communicated Principal Race Officer Stuart Childerley.

The Maxi 1 and Maxi 2 classes will complete windward-leeward races, while all other classes will be set a coastal course. Forecasts indicate a Mistral of 11 to 15 knots with gusts of up to 20 knots.
