English Channel Record

Double victory for Giovanni Soldini and Maserati Multi 70, who conquered the English Channel Record with a time of 4 hours, 30 minutes and 49 seconds, beating the PowerPlay opponent by just over 3 minutes (4 hours, 34 minutes and 6 seconds) . The two Trimarans left Cowes (UK) this morning: the Maserati Multi 70 crosses the start line at 9:13:40 GMT, a few minutes after Peter Cunningham PowerPlay’s MOD 70, and reaches the finish line in Dinard ( FR) at 13: 00:44:29 GMT, covering the 138 miles of the route with an average speed of 30.59 knots.

The Italian team improved by 18 minutes the time set in 2015 by Lloyd Thornburg and Brian Thompson aboard the Phaedo3. The trip times have been compiled by the two race crews and must be ratified by the World Sailing Speed Racing Council.

“The first hour was quite slow,” says Soldini, “to get out of the Solent we had to make 5 or 6 taunts. Fortunately, once in the Canal, we took off and hit the road. We did a very fast crossing, with averages of up to 35 knots. However, this was not enough to beat PowerPlay, which still achieved exceptional speeds, but what really made the difference was the course: we were super attentive to the trajectories, especially between the Channel Islands, and this allowed us to get these few minutes. go ahead. So I wanted to thank my super team, but also Peter Cunningham and PowerPlay, who made the challenge even more exciting! ”

A crew of 6 sailors aboard the trimaran for this challenge with Soldini: Ambrogio Beccaria, Vittorio Bissaro, Guido Broggi, François Robert, Carlos Hernandez Robayna and Matteo Soldini.

The Cowes-Dinard represents the second of three English Channel records presented in the Maserati Multi 70 sports program: on April 16 the Team conquered the Plymouth-La Rochelle record (12 hours, 15 minutes and 21 seconds) and , if the conditions allow him, in the coming weeks he will attempt a new feat, the record of the Fastnet Original Course (from Cowes to Plymouth, passing through the Fastnet lighthouse, south of Ireland), set just a few weeks ago by the rival PowerPlay.
