Liberty Bitcoin Moth Cup – Day 2
The 2nd day of the Foiling Week and the Liberty Bitcoin Moth Cup was very successful. Four races were held in southerly 10-16 knots of breeze.
The bookmaker’s favourite Tom Slingsby (36) from Australia, Olympic Gold Medallist and current Moth World Champion, did not disappoint with three striking race wins!
The surprise of the day was Nicolai Jacobsen (19), from Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (RHKYC) who took home a strong race win in the first regatta and is in second place overall with 5, 4 and 3 in the other races.
After four races Iain Jensen (33), the other Olympic Gold medallist from Australia is third overall, while the Italian superstars Francesco Bruni (47) and Tita Ruggero (29) are fourth and fifth overall.
Nicolai is the youngest sailor in the fleet. For the last 15 months Nicolai has been coached by Chris Rashley from the UK. Nicolai was the flight controller onboard the RHKYC’s Team Agiplast Youth America’s Cup program, while for the last 5 months he has been training full time in Hong Kong, UK and Italy with his moth campaign.
“At this stage I never had expected to be up there with the top guys. I had an amazing day and everything just clicked into place. Taking a bullet today against some of the world’s best sailors is certainly nothing I will forget anytime soon. However, tomorrow is another race day and with 8 races left a lot can still happen! But…I am definitely enjoying today and this moment,” said Nicolai Jacobsen.
The weather forecast is good for the 3rd day , while Sunday is expected to be more challenging with showers and unpredictable wind.
