Ever Given leaves the Suez Canal

Ever Given – Suez Canal

The Ever Given resumed its departure from the Suez Canal, 106 days after traversing a southern section of the waterway for nearly a week and disrupting world trade.

The Ever Given began moving north into the Great Bitter Lake, which separates two sections of the canal and where she has been moored with her Indian crew since she was refloated on March 29.

The Ever Given was escorted by tugboats as she crossed the channel to the Mediterranean.

A ceremony was held in the canal to mark the departure of the ship, which is loaded with about 18,300 containers.

The Ever Given had settled into the southernmost single-lane stretch of the canal on March 23 amid strong winds.

She was later detained by the Suez Canal Authority by court order while the authority sought compensation from the ship’s Japanese owner, Shoei Kisen, and his insurers.

The SCA claimed more than $ 900 million for the salvage operation and other losses, later lowered to $ 550 million. Ever Given’s owners and insurers had disputed her arrest and the claim for compensation.
