The first stage of the 2021 Circuito Atlántico Sur/ South Atlantic Circuit was closed. This iconic championship, which is organized by the Yacht Club Argentino in conjunction with the Yacht Club Punta del Este, had to adapt to the limitations imposed by the pandemic, but it was still a success .
The first weekend was for the ORC International, ORC Club and PHRF formulas, with an important number of 74 registered boats, which raced in front of the Dársena Norte headquarters of the YCA.
The stipulated competition days were four, from Saturday 16 to Tuesday 19 January, but they ended up being three due to the lack of wind on the final day.
The previous three days, meanwhile, had very different weather conditions. The first of them, with winds of between 5 and 7 knots from the South-Southwest that rotated to the North, started a medium-distance race (41 miles) for ORC, while PHRF used a course with fixed marks.
Sunday was the day with the strongest winds, which touched 25 knots. With a four-legged Windward-Leeward course, conditions allowed ORC International to run the two scheduled races, while the other two formulas started only one.
That difference was equated on Monday, which, incidentally, was the day when the wind was most stable. Again with the traditional Barlovento-Sotavento route, ORC Club and PHRF ran three regattas finishing around 7:30 p.m.
On the final day of the championship, beyond the fact that the scheduled regatta had to be canceled, the traditional third time and the awards ceremony were replaced by individual celebrations, to comply with the security measures.
