Catamaran Sunreef 80 Eco
Sunreef Yachts has just started building what it claims will be “the world’s most advanced sustainable luxury catamaran.”
Sunreef’s new fully electric catamaran combines solar and wind power for unlimited range, featuring a special solar skin that produces clean energy.
The electric boat, known as the Sunreef 80 Eco, combines the latest eco-friendly technologies with the reliability of a day sail and the comfort of a superyacht.
She was first introduced last year as part of the Polish shipyard’s new Eco line comprising a handful of vessels ranging from 40 to 100 feet.
This 80-foot model takes a holistic approach to eco-cruising.
She can harness and store renewable energy both above and below the waterline, which means that she can cruise silently without emissions for days and days. In fact, the shipyard says it has an infinite range.
The most innovative feature is the solar skin. This photovoltaic system will see the world’s lightest solar cells integrated into the sides of the hull, superstructure, bimini and carbon mast. Covering a total area of approximately 1,600 square feet, the skin will generate up to 34 kWp of clean energy that will be stored in custom-designed lithium batteries. It also gives the multihull a modern and futuristic look.

When it comes to propulsion, the cat takes a multi-pronged approach. It can be powered by its two energy-efficient 180 kW electric motors or by the wind.
While sailing, the boat uses an advanced hydraulic generation system to recover energy from the rotation of the propeller.
Together, the two propellers can generate more than 15 kWh while sailing around 7 knots. This energy is then used to power the motors and appliances on board.
“The Sunreef 80 Eco is all about responsible boating and reliance on renewable energy,” Sunreef founder and president Francis Lapp said in a statement. “We are now combining the industry’s most innovative solar power system with hydroelectric generation.”
The ship also features a high-tech water management system, high-efficiency air conditioning, wind generators, and non-toxic undercoats. In terms of decoration, it is fully customizable and features a range of ethically sourced sustainable materials and furniture.
Designed for long adventures on the high seas, the Sunreef 80 Eco hits the water this summer.
