Mexican authorities have located Baltimore sailor Donald Lawson’s capsized trimaran in the Pacific Ocean 300 miles south-southwest of Acapulco.

Lawson set off July 5 from Acapulco, Mexico, to sail via the Panama Canal to Baltimore, where he planned to prepare for a solo circumnavigation attempt this fall.

The family of missing sailor Donald Lawson reports a vessel found capsized off the coast of Mexico is, indeed, Defiant, Lawson’s 60-foot racing trimaran

Lawson’s catamaran is the 60-foot trimaran Defiant.

Lawson is a professional sailor and the founder of the Dark Seas Project, a nonprofit that focuses on the diversification of sailing. His wife, Jacqueline, said she had not heard from him in over a week.

Lawson messaged his wife on July 9 that he had been experiencing difficulties with his hydraulic rigging. This had prompted him to rely solely on a wind generator given that he lacked engine power.
