Remembering John Fisher

If you’re lucky enough to get the chance to do a race like this, everyone should grab it, I think. It isn’t for everyone, but you should always challenge yourself.

– John Fisher (1970 – 2018)

On this day five years ago, during the 2017-18 edition of the Race, Team Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag reported that John Fisher had been lost overboard in gale force conditions, some 1,400 miles west of Cape Horn.

Despite a search lasting several hours in challenging and deteriorating conditions, the Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag team was unable to recover their teammate.

John, known as ‘Fish’ to so many of his fellow sailors, was universally beloved and respected as a generous crew mate. He relished his time in the race and loved passing on his experience to younger crew on the team.

All of us in The Ocean Race family and the wider sailing community join together on this day to pay our respects to Fish, and send our condolences along with our very warmest thoughts to John’s family, his many friends and his mates.
