Toyota Optimist National Championships
Matteo Barker officially took the title after scoring a 2, 2, 1, 1 — putting him on 14 points, a full 19 points ahead of second-place finisher Hamish Brown.
Matteo said, “The goal today was to not be too risky, have safe starts, and not get a drop.” And he nailed it! Matteo’s drop — believe it or not — was a third!
Coming into the first of the finals races, it was Zofia Wells who was leading, just one point ahead of Matteo. Zofia sailed an exceptional regatta and finished on 39 points, placing her fifth overall and first girl. This marks a three-place improvement on her 2024 result, where she finished 8th overall (and first girl as well).
“My plan going into today was to get four top-five results and not get a drop, but I had a 15th to carry due to my scoring penalty, so things didn’t quite go to plan. But I had a great regatta,” said Zofia.
Hamish Brown had a glamour final day, scoring 5, 7, 2, 2 to finish on 33 points and secure the silver.
Third overall was Will Fyfe — repeating his result from 2024.
Overall winner of the Silver Fleet was Will Noyer with Ula Chan as the top girl.
In the White Fleet is was Elliot Moll as the top ranked sailor with Dallas Noyer as the top girl.
