Jan Koum, the founder of WhatsApp, arrives in Ibiza with his €220 million superyacht
The southern coast of Ibiza has just welcomed one of the most impressive and exclusive superyachts in the world. Visible due to its sheer size, the Moonrise is much more than a €220 million yacht; it is owned by Jan Koum, the billionaire co-founder of WhatsApp.
Measuring 100 meters long and 16 meters wide, the Moonrise arrived from Gibraltar. It was escorted by two support vessels: the Power Play, a 53-meter jewel, and the Nebula, its new, more modern main auxiliary vessel.
Jan Koum’s yacht
Jan Koum, of Ukrainian origin and raised in a humble family, rose to fame after founding WhatsApp in 2009 with Brian Acton. In 2014, Facebook acquired WhatsApp for €19 billion.
Two years after leaving WhatsApp, he acquired the yacht.
After leaving Facebook in 2018, Koum has kept a low profile, focusing on investments, philanthropy, and, it seems, enjoying his time aboard his floating palace. Acquired in 2020, the Moonrise is built by the Dutch shipyard Feadship, boasts interiors designed by Rémi Tessier, capacity for 16 guests, a crew of more than 30, and amenities such as a gym, spa, cinema, helipad, and even hybrid propulsion systems.
Koum also uses the yacht as a workspace and for private meetings. His discretion, both personally and professionally, contrasts with the size of the vessel, considered one of the most elegant in the world.
