A BOAT IN VALENCIA IS CONTROLLED FROM BARCELONA THANKS TO 5G
The Mobile World Congress featured a demonstration of 5G technology applied to navigation: an unmanned ship located in the Valencia Marina was controlled by visitors from Barcelona
The Orange company in collaboration with ZTE, the iTeam institute of the Polytechnic University of Valencia and the Valencia Navy, demonstrated the use of remote control on an unmanned ship located in Valencia, and controlled from Barcelona thanks to the 5G network.
The vessel sails with no one aboard in the dock is a modified Laser class sailboat.
The Laser5G measures five meters in length and is equipped with cameras, sensors and controls.
More than 360 kilometers away, a skipper handles the boat equipped with VR glasses, experiencing a sensation close to that of sailing in the Marina of Valencia.
This immersive remote navigation experience is possible thanks to two of the characteristics of the 5G mobile network, such as ultra-low latency and ultra-wide band, allowing to steer the boat with precision even though the ‘skipper’ is hundreds of kilometers away. away.
