2021 Optimist World Championship at Fraglia Vela Riva, Lake Garda – Day 4
After two days of Team Racing World Championship, which ended yesterday with success for the Italian team in the final against Thailand, the operations of the individual World Championship resumed today in Riva del Garda, where on Friday the 9th the 2021 World Champion will be crowned.
Two races were completed today for all participants, now divided into Gold fleet, from which will emerge the name of the new Optimist World Champion, Silver, Bronze and Emerald. The wind was blowing steadily from the South at around 10 knots, progressively decreasing in intensity during the afternoon.
The first day of the finals immediately brought an important change to the top of the standings, with American Gil Hackel now leading, putting in extremely solid results (1-2 today). The American sailor takes over from Weka Bhanubandh (17-11 today) who slips to second place overall. The Thai sailor had maintained control of the ranking since the qualifying stages. The Brazilian sailor Alex Di Francesco Kuhl (12-12) in third continues to stay on the provisional podium. The top five is completed by the Ukrainian sailor Danyl Mykhailichenko (4-29) and Alex Demurtas (24-1), winner of today’s second race and first among the Italians sailors.
The women’s ranking continues to be led by the Polish sailor Ewa Lewandowska, but Italy’s Lisa Vucetti has closed the gap with only three points between them now.
The 2021 Optimist World Championship is hosted by Fraglia Vela Riva in collaboration with FIV, IODA, AICO, Riva del Garda Fierecongressi, North Lake Garda and Trentino.
