The New York Yacht Club will not support the defender-only America’s Cup and the Challenger of Record
New York Yacht Club Commodore Christopher J. Culver has criticized the prospect of a one-off America’s Cup match between the New Zealand team and the UK’s INEOS team, saying the idea was not the best for the navegation.
New Zealand, which won and retained this year with a 7-3 victory over Luna Rossa, accepted Royal Yacht Squadron Racing, represented by INEOS Team UK, as the record challenger for the 37th America’s Cup on Friday.
The next cup could reportedly be held on the Isle of Wight, as originally in 1851, as a one-off match between TNZ and INEOS.
All other challengers would be excluded, including NYCC, which successfully defended the trophy 24 times
“The New York Yacht Club will not support a Deed of Gift match or America’s Cup competition that … is effectively open only to the defender and the Challenger of Record.”
Luna Rossa’s helmsman Jimmy Spithill said he would be surprised if the Auld Mug was not defended again in New Zealand.
