Italy-based design studio Lazzarini has unveiled designs for a solar-powered amphibious “crabmaran” called Pagurus, which the study says will be the world’s first.

The term crabmaran combines the words “crab” and “catamaran“, which is appropriate since it moves on the sand, like a crab. This unique vessel was initially conceived for military use, but is now offered to the private sector at a high cost.

Design studio Lazzarini decided to call it Pagurus – the Latin word for crab. Pagurus is our third project inspired by the crab, highlighted not only in its catamaran shapes but also in its functions; the fact that it can move on the sand like a crab.

Pagurus combines solar technology with an innovative and luxurious design. It can host up to eight guests and four crew members, with a lounge, kitchen, three bedrooms, and bathroom. The 82ft (25m) superyacht is built with twin steel hulls, which can be configured for different interiors based on the owner’s taste. Their dwellings are divided into two hulls, connected by a steel bridge and the tower platform. The steel bridge reinforces and reinforces the main body of the boat.

A crane platform attached to four electric winches is built into the center of the yacht. This deck can transform into a dining room, outdoor lounge, or it could be used as a loading and unloading dock for various items, such as an ATV or smaller boa.

The boat is equipped with a twin-propeller stern thruster and two 890 hp diesel engines, providing a top speed of around 24 knots (28 mph or 44 km / h). Twin threaded steel cylinders measuring 3.9 feet (1.2 meters) in diameter and 21.3 feet (6.5 meters) in length are located on the bottom of the hulls. These rotating steel cylinders are connected to a transfluid transmission and generate power to recharge the yacht’s batteries while sailing. “The cylinders can generate movement in the water (5 knots) and simultaneously energy”, said Lazzarini.

Pagurus is equipped with solar panels on most of the upper surfaces of the yacht and is paired with six 360V batteries, each rated at 40 kWh, providing around six to seven hours at 4 knots (5 mph or 7 km / h) in all-electric mode.
