Resolute Cup at the New York Yacht Club
Breeze Builds, Leaderboard Comes into Focus Ahead of Finale
After two days of relatively benign conditions, the breeze swooped in for Day 3 of the Resolute Cup and started separating the contenders from the pretenders. The building southerly, which peaked into the high teens, was augmented later in the day by a strong ebb tide running against the wind. The resulting short, steep chop made for tough sledding for all competitors—upwind and downwind—caused a few breakdowns and left some competitors nursing minor bumps and bruises.
The polished and practiced Corinthian Yacht Club team continues to show it is the class of this field, scoring 13 points over its four races today and, ever so slightly, putting a little daylight between it and the other top teams. With 31 points and an average race finish of 2.8, the two-time defending champion from Marblehead, Mass., is currently 5.4 points clear of Eastern Yacht Club, which received redress for an equipment failure in the day’s second race.
San Diego Yacht Club is third, less than two points further back. Behind those three clubs is another gap to Bayview Yacht Club of Detroit and Annapolis Yacht Club, which won the day with just 12 points over 4 races. The totals on the books after 18 races—Bayview carrying 50 and AYC with 46—are a little deceiving since half of the boats are sitting on 13 races while the remainder have 14. The rotations are constructed so that every four races, every team will have sailed the same number of races.
“It was the windiest we’ve seen, and the current shifted about halfway through the day,” said Will Holz, the skipper for the Chicago Yacht Club team which finished the day with a second and a first and sits eighth. “It felt like [the breeze got] into the 20s. Definitely a little bit of different conditions from what we’ve seen the rest of this week. It was tough out there, really hard driving.
With 18 races in the books, the race committee is looking at two full-fleet races tomorrow and then the top half will sail up to three double-point medal races to decide the overall champion. Unlike the earlier races, there will be no drops from the medal race series.
