The incident took place off the island of Shikoku and involved the Soryu, the first ship in a class of eleven diesel-electric attack submarines. Three divers suffered minor injuries
Photos after the accident show the damage to her starboard sail. Reports say it also sustained damage to the antenna mast, affecting the submarine’s ability to communicate for some time after the accident.
The merchant ship is the MV Ocean Artemis, a 93,103 DWT bulk carrier built in 2011, carrying iron ore. She suffered minor damage, no injuries.
