Shark attack forces suspension of World Surf League start in Hawaii

The Roxi Maui Pro, the tournament that kicked off the World Surf League in Hawaii, had to be suspended due to a shark attack on an amateur surfer. It was the day in which the Australians Tyler Wright and Sally Fitzgibbons had to face each other in the semifinals of the tournament when, three hours before the start of the competition, the news came that a surfer, in his 50s, outside the tournament had suffered the attack of a shark.

It was at the mouth of the river, near the coast. The man suffered leg injuries and was taken to shore where he underwent cardiopulmonary resuscitation before being taken to hospital.

WSL Executive Director Erik Logan said the event was canceled and organizers were working with local officials to assess when it could resume.

This accident comes just a week and a half after a woman suffered traumatic injuries to her frontal torso in a shark attack off West Maui.
