Luxury liveaboard yacht CARLTON QUEEN capsizes and sinks shortly after a dive at Abu Nuhas, Egypt
On April 25th, 2023, the M/Y CARLTON QUEEN, a liveaboard boat built in 2022, overturned shortly after embarking on a liveaboard cruise from Abu Nuhas across the Strait of Gubal. The boat had 26 guests and 9 crew members on board, most of whom were experienced diving instructors. Fortunately, all individuals were rescued by nearby ships. According to the shipping company, the capsize caused the M/Y CARLTON QUEEN to sink. Eyewitnesses reported that the ship was already tilting to starboard before the cruise began. Almost all guests were inside the vessel after completing a prior dive when the incident occurred. Witnesses also stated that the Captain turned the boat during what was believed to be relatively calm seas, causing the vessel to tilt even further and eventually capsize. According to the guests, the Captain was the first to leave the vessel, followed by guests either boarding a life raft or jumping into the water. Fortunately, all guests were able to leave the interior of the ship, although some suffered minor injuries.
The M/Y CARLTON QUEEN measures 42m in length, has a beam of 8.5m, and can accommodate up to 28 guests in 14 cabins.
