Safety drone warns pro surfer when shark is approaching
As part of a new “shark mitigation program,” Surf Life Saving NSW has begun operating special safety drones at 34 locations in New South Whales.
Recently, one of these drones captured an extremely close encounter between pro surfer Matt Wilkinson and a nearby shark, warning him from above just as a shark was approaching from below.
The video shows how the Beau Monks operator spots the shark during a “routine surveillance flight” and used the onboard loudspeaker to broadcast a warning message.
The lifeguards were motivated and with the drone speaker to get everyone out of the water.
