Research and education of future leaders in sustainability are part of this journey. The Statsraad Lehmkuhl expedition provides the opportunity to explore the sea and collect large amounts of data to improve knowledge about the state of the world’s oceans with respect to the distribution of organisms, fish populations, environmental status, climate and influencing factors.

Objectives of the One Ocean expedition:

The main objective of the expedition is to obtain and exchange new knowledge about the ocean and contribute to the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Its purposes are:

Educate future world leaders on the crucial role of the ocean in achieving sustainable development
Cooperate with scientists, leaders and youth around the world to build a sustainable future for our ocean
Contribute to generating ocean research and knowledge of global interest
Provide a platform for the development and dissemination of the broad spectrum of knowledge and research necessary for the sustainable management of the oceans
Discuss, promote and make known to the world the report of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development
Use the trip in every way possible to generate engagement and raise awareness of these goals

The sailing ship Statsraad Lehmkuhl

The great Norwegian sailing ship Statsraad Lehmkuhl, built in 1914, is one of the largest and fastest sailing ships in the world, owned by a private Bergen foundation that operates it. The sailboat makes frequent long-distance trips as a training vessel with cadets from the naval academies of Norway and other countries, and regularly participates in TallShips’ Races and other regattas maintaining an excellent track record.

During a current year, up to 70% of our tours are carried out under sail. This year, we have also installed batteries on board, which are recharged while sailing, reducing the use of our main engine to a minimum. Our boat will thus become the greenest sailboat of its kind in the world. Our view is that no other ship of its size can be a better ambassador for the United Nations Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development and, with that in mind, we set sail for the OneOcean Expedition.

The circumnavigation:

For 19 months, from August 2021 to April 2023, it plans to visit more than 37 ports around the world and sail more than 55,000 nautical miles. We will have different collaborators in the different stages, with the common purpose of promoting the objectives of the trip and educating future leaders of a sustainable world. During our stay in the various ports, we plan to use the ship for high-level meetings, conferences and receptions, and to promote cultural exchange and learning in each port and country we visit. In 2021, the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy will present its final report, along with a set of bold and pragmatic recommendations, as a roadmap for aligning sound economic development with protecting the ocean’s vital natural capital. One Ocean aspires to debate, promote and make this report known to the world.
