Daniel García de la Casa wins the 32nd Palamós International Optimist Trophy-16 Nations Cup

The Spanish Daniel García de la Casa (CN El Masnou) has been proclaimed champion of the 32nd edition of the Palamós International Optimist Trophy-12 Nations Cup, which has been held from February 17 to 20 in the waters of Palamós Bay, with the participation of 532 vessels from 26 countries. The 16 Nations Cup, the best country went to Spain, placing four sailors in the top ten: Daniel García de la Casa (1), Tim Lubat (2), Hugo Rodríguez (4) and Carlos Espí (7).

This meant that it was also translated into a final fight for victory, which would be won by the Catalan Daniel García de la Plaza after making a 3-2 in the final day in the gold group. Tim Lubat (RCN Palma) from the Balearic Islands finished second overall, five points behind the champion, and third place went to Italian Lorenzo Ghirotti (Fraglia della Vela Riva). He was about to have a one hundred percent Spanish podium, since the Balearic Hugo Rodríguez (CN Arenal), who won the last two races, finished fourth, staying just one point from the podium and from the plenary session.

The Greek Konstantinos Portosalte, who was leading the last day, could not hold his position and finally closed his participation in seventh position.

The first classified in the female category was the Italian Victoria Demurtas, followed by the French Sarah Jannin and third the champion of Spain Blanca Ferrando. In the sub13 category, García de la Casa also took the trophy in the men’s category and in the sub12 category the trophy went to the Dutch Maurits Melens.

Two special prizes were also awarded, the Xavier Ribera in memory of the former president of the Palamós Sailing Club, and which went to Jordi Camón, as the best local sailor, and the Martinet Prize, for the Frenchman Paul Lenoir, the youngest sailor in the whole the fleet.

On the last day the fleet sailed distributed among the different groups: Gold, Silver, Bronze, Emerald and Pearl. It was not an easy day, the thermal wind did not come in past noon, with an intensity between 3 and 5 knots, allowing two tests to be held, which brought the 32nd edition of the Palamós International Optimist Trophy-16 Nations Cup to a close with the celebration of seven tests.

Hugo Rodríguez champion of the Excellence Cup

The Balearic sailor Hugo Rodríguez received the award as the winner of the Excellence Cup 2021-2022 circuit, which has included the Ciudad de Vigo Atlantic Week, the Ciudad de El Puerto Regatta, the Euromarina Optimist Torrevieja Trophy and the Palamós International Optimist Trophy.
